Winners 2021/22

This year’s WBDS Awards were extremely competitive and our judges were particularly rigorous in their selection of work at every stage of the judging process. From the hundreds of entries only 94 works were selected for an award. 1 Black, 27 x Golds, 76x Silver, 72x Bronze and 49 Commended Awards.

The World Brand Design Society – Agency Design Awards will reopen on the 1st of May 2022, and we will continue supporting agencies and promoting their work. All agencies can pre-register for the WBDS Awards here and you can also submit work to be published on our website here.

ONE WBDS BLACK MARK

Only one Agency Black Mark has been handed out in 2021/22, and this goes to Backbone Branding for their incredible work for Bnavan brand identity and packaging design.

AGENCY OF THE YEAR

This year's World Brand Design Society Awards – Agency of the Year goes to Kind, for the second year running. The highly successful agency is based in Bergen, Norway, and has won a total of 17 awards, including two Gold, four Silver, and eight Bronze and three commended awards. Kind’s most notable works, the two golds; rebrand and packaging design creation for new producer of Premium Norwegian Sea Greens Nordi and Kind's stunning photography for identity for Åmot Luxury Lodging that transports you into another world.

BEST AGENCY WORK OF THE YEAR

Closely followed behind Kind was Backbone Branding from Armenia, who picked up one Black for Best Agency Work of the Year, five Gold, one Silver and one Bronze. Backbone Branding's Black award for Bnavan Brand Identity and Packaging Design is well deserved for its delightful and playful illustration that ties the brand and packaging together. It's the kind of packaging you would pick up multiple times in-store to explore the narrative.

The Teastan Tea brief was designed around packaging that visually expresses the associations and feelings, aromatic notes, and effects of drinking tea. Judge Jay Gouliard, Vice President Global Packaging at Mondelēz International, described Backbone Branding's packaging design creation for Teastan Tea as "Thoughtful design with shoppers in mind. Fantastic graphics design supporting the brand essence."

Backbone Branding's brief for Ani Yogurts was to create a brand new product in the market for fruit and berry topping similar to the brand identity to transfer all the accumulated benefits associated with the parent brand and to be inviting to existing loyal consumers. Monica Holmvik Persdotter, Global Category Director at Arla Foods, Sweden, says "This packaging design is super clear to any consumer as to the content and taste of the product. It looks clean, natural and tasty. The drops coming down the fruit alludes to the texture of the yogurt. The fact that the ingredients are visible at the top and bottom gives credibility and transparency to the content. It's brilliant." and David Carson describes the work as "Fresh".

NOTABLE AGENCIES

Gold Award and 2nd Place Intertype Studio work for super-premium spirit T House Gin's are outstanding. The work provides exquisite individual details that, as a whole, delivers a mesmerising brand narrative.

Yalla Premium Coconut Tapioca Desserts Branding Designed by Harcus Design is so enticing, with packaging that looks like fridge interior design. Well worthy of a Gold Award and 3rd Place.

Kingdom & Sparrow intelligent and quirky label brings personality, brand differentiation and some ownable assets to the premium rum brand, Hattiers.

Then there is Mubien Brands + Workshop Built explorative concept for I, The Queen Wine Range, an inspirational creative piece of work that encourages people to uncork their inner queen.

Onfire Design challenges and disrupts the cheese category with Talbot Forest Cheese Co. Branding and Packaging Design. Creativity and bravery to be commended, revolutionary but still relevant to the brand and category.

Small Giants insect snacks, a food revolution to help consumers do better for themselves and the planet. Midday hit this branding and packaging design out of the park, absolutely stunning work for this evolving category.

BRU:D x Brand2Life teamed up to create a confident and unconventional branding and new brand launch for healthy and safety technologies company Evotix. "Taking something as mundane as health and safety and turning the creative execution of that on its head, is something that should be commended for sheer bravery. This could have easily been another selection of images of people on work sites with corporate fonts overlayed, but this challenges that creative stereotype and delivers something that feels oddly engaging." – Lee Barnsley, Reckitt, Global Head of Design & Brand Experience

Great attention to detail created by ShenZhen Lingyu for the alcoholic beverage WuDu (Black Porcelain) from China, made from five traditional Chinese herbal medicines and described as "Great multi-sensory, exquisite design communicating the brand essence brilliantly. – Jay Gouliard, Vice President of Global Packaging at Mondelēz International
